Role Model
I had an amazing experience this past week. One that touched me very deeply. I had been contacted from a fellow in Pakistan about questions he had around Action Learning. I am considered as one of the top in the field, so this in and of itself was not unusual.
We exchanged several more emails over the next few weeks as he set up his Action Learning project.
Action Learning is a problem solving tool that leads to breakthrough solutions well we develop the team, both in terms of being team members and leaders. On the surface it appears to be a very simple process; however, the challenges with using it quickly emerge. Hence there needs to be a coach that has been trained to implement the process.
After he’s first project he requested a video call so we could meet and discuss in more detail.
We had a very pleasant conversation, where he expressed his deepest gratitude. As we were getting ready to wrap up the conversation he felt it important to share with me how much he appreciated my openness. He went on to explain, that he had insisted his son read our email exchange. He then told his son that this is how people should treat each other. Knowledge shouldn’t be hoarded for money but freely shared. He said “Dr. Bea” has become a household word, as he encourages his entire family to live like “Dr. Bea”.
He then when on to say it is actually bigger than just his home life, that “Dr. Bea” is well known at the office and he is trying to instill this open honest culture there, using me as an example.
For me, it’s just who I am. I cannot imagine not helping someone that I can help. A quick reply to an email seemed so simple for me. However, for my new friend it was life changing. He is now planning to come to the US to partake in one of my certification program and take his Action Learning to the next level. After that he will look at the possibility of being the WIAL affiliate in Pakistan. All of this because I took a few minutes to answer his questions.
And thus we have another legacy moment.
